Nanwalek Students Create Native Cuisine Videos

Nanwalek School celebrates Sea Week during extreme tides each spring, and cultural learning is integrated throughout the week as students honor the sea and the marine environment in which they live.  This year, secondary students were inspired to blend the technology they are learning through the Apple & ConnectED Grant with documentaries on their favorite Sugpiaq foods, producing a series on Native Cuisine.  The series starts with an introduction to Nanwalek, “a place with a lagoon,” followed by a video on sourcing food:  gathering subsistence foods traditionally eaten in their culture.  With these two informative videos in place, students proceeded to invite community members in to demonstrate how to make Native dishes, and used iPads to film the process of each.  After editing their work, products were shared with the community through Facebook and on You Tube.

Nanwalek Sea Week is April 16 – 20

Our annual Sea Week is just around the corner during the week of April 16-20. Nanwalek students will gain traditional knowledge from community members, and we will enjoy several guests who will do science and art activities with students.  Alaska Sea Life Center, Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies, Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association will explore science, while Debbie Harris and guest UAA Professor Herminia Din will do some art with students!  Also, students will be working with coaches from Apple to create a digital book about Sea Week, Native foods cuisine videos, and a Sugt’stun Sea Week eBook.  The schedule is like a jigsaw puzzle, with a lot going on for everyone!  Stop by the school to see the schedule and join the community potluck on Friday, April 20!

Nanwalek Sea Week is April 24 – 28!

This year’s Sea Week is the last week of April!  We have some exciting things planned for the kids, including  cooking traditional foods with elders and community members, visits from the Alaska SeaLife Center, Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies, Kachemak Bay Research Reserve,  KPBSD Art Teacher Debbie Harris, and artist Gwendolyn Chatfield (dance and sea chanteys).  We will do a community scavenger hunt, clean up the village, and have a community Sea Week potluck.  Visitors from our ConnectED Initiative will be here to join us, and continue our community video project.  We celebrate the sea!
